Design & Technology

Intent

At CVIS the intention is that children gain a firm understanding of what Design and Technology is by equipping them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of craft and design. Our objective at CVIS is to develop a curiosity for the subject, as well as an understanding and acceptance of the validity and importance of all types of Design and Technology, and an unbiased respect for the role that Design and Technology may wish to be expressed in any person’s life. We are committed to ensuring children understand the value and importance of Design and Technology in the wider community, and are able to use their Design and Technology skills, knowledge, and experiences to involve themselves in Design and Technology, in a variety of different contexts.

Implementation

The Design and Technology curriculum ensures students produce creative work, exploring their ideas and recording their experiences and become proficient in developing, planning and communicating ideas, working with tools, equipment, materials and components, evaluating processes and products and other Design and Technology techniques. The elements of Design and Technology are taught in lessons so that children are able to generate ideas using the language of Design and Technology.

EYFS specific

Follow Development Matters Document. Children will aim to manipulate materials to achieve a planned effect, construct with a purpose in mind, using a variety of resources, use simple tools and techniques competently and appropriately, select appropriate resources and adapt work where necessary, and select tools and techniques needed to shape, assemble and join materials they are using. Children are given opportunities to respond to stimulus through Design and Technology. Children are provided with opportunities to explore different materials and are taught about different structures.

KS1 specific

Follow KS1 NC curriculum. Class lessons allow children to plan, make and evaluate a wide range of Design and Technology ideas using appropriate materials.

In Year 1 the children will draw on their own experience to help generate ideas and make their design using appropriate techniques and then evaluate by discussing how well it works in relation to the purpose. In Year 2 the children will generate ideas by drawing on their own and other people’s experiences, begin to select tools and materials, use vocabulary to name and describe them and evaluate against their design criteria.

Impact

Whilst in school, children have access to a varied programme, which allows them to discover areas of strength, as well as areas they might like to improve upon. The integral nature of Design and Technology and the learner creates an enormously rich palette from which a child may access fundamental abilities such as: achievement, self-confidence, interaction with and awareness of others and self-reflection. Children are able to enjoy Design and Technology, in as many ways as they choose - either as a designer or observer. They can observe Design and Technology and comprehend it. They have an understanding of how to further develop skills less known to them, should they ever develop an interest in their lives.
