Art

Intent

At CVIS the intention is that children gain a firm understanding of what art is by equipping them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design. Our objective at CVIS is to develop a curiosity for the subject, as well as an understanding and acceptance of the validity and importance of all types of art, and an unbiased respect for the role that art may wish to be expressed in any person’s life. We are committed to ensuring children understand the value and importance of art in the wider community, and are able to use their art skills, knowledge, and experiences to involve themselves in art, in a variety of different contexts.

Implementation

The art curriculum ensures students produce creative work, exploring their ideas and recording their experiences and become proficient in drawing, painting, sculpture and other art, craft and design techniques. This is embedded in the classroom activities as well as Art club. Our children also receive art enrichment lessons which expose them to a more varied curriculum. The elements of art are taught in lessons so that children are able to evaluate and analyse creative works using the language of art, craft and design.

EYFS specific

Follow EYFS. Children explore what happens when they mix colours experiment to create different textures and understand that different media can be combined to create new effects. Children are given opportunities to respond to stimulus through art. Children are provided with opportunities to explore different media and are taught about different artists and their art.

KS1 specific

Follow KS1 NC curriculum. Class lessons allow children to explore and to develop a wide range of art and design techniques in using colour, pattern, texture, line, shape, form and space.

In Year 1 the children will use a variety of techniques, mix and match colours to artefacts and objects, work on different scales, mix secondary colours and shades using different types of paint. In Year 2 the children will experiment with tools and techniques eg layering and scraping through.

Impact

Whilst in school, children have access to a varied programme, which allows them to discover areas of strength, as well as areas they might like to improve upon. The integral nature of art and the learner creates an enormously rich palette from which a child may access fundamental abilities such as: achievement, self-confidence, interaction with and awareness of others and self-reflection. Art will also develop an understanding of culture and history, both in relation to students individually and other ethnicities from across the world. Children are able to enjoy art, in as many ways as they choose- either as a creator or observer. They can observe art and comprehend it. They will have an understanding of how to further develop skills less known to them, should they develop art as an interest in their lives.
